The First Nations Housing Professionals Certification Program consists of five courses:

  • 100: Covers the history and legislation of First Nations housing and infrastructure, cultural considerations, construction elements, infrastructure, and governance.
  • 200: Focuses on the role of the housing manager, problem-solving, decision-making, planning, accountability, and performance management, as well as policies.
  • 300: Covers the development of programs and projects, funding and project proposals, program and project management, tenders and project management, housing maintenance, working with clients, and program evaluation, reporting, and communications.
  • 400: Focuses on functional supports like human resources, finance and management accounting, information and technology, housing and systems, legal issues, quality, benchmarking, risk management, strategic alliances, and partnerships.
  • 500: Covers professionalism, continuous learning, mentoring, self-care, ethical considerations, and critical skills like working with people, leadership, facilitation, managing meetings, etc.

Successful completion of the program and the final exam, along with two years of practical work experience, will lead to certification as a First Nations Housing Professional (FNHP). For more information, check out the general information guide or the FNHP Program Preparation Guide.

This course first provides the housing professional with key insight into the role and responsibilities of the housing professional. Problem-solving and decision-making, strategic management (strategy formulation, implementation and evaluation), accountability, performance management and policies are explored bringing together critical elements of leadership required in First Nations housing departments today.

This course first provides the housing professional with key insight into the many functional supports required by Housing Professionals, including: human resources; financial management and accounting; information and technology; housing and systems; legal; quality, benchmarking and risk; and, strategic alliances and partnerships.

2023 Winter

This course first provides participants with key insight into the topic of professionalism, an important factor that is necessary to succeed as a Housing Professional.  Individual lessons deal with learning and mentoring, self-care, ethics, leadership, facilitation, meetings management, working with change, innovation and creativity.
